A computer is an investment, and like all investments you should know what you are getting into before you invest. The following tutorial should help you understand the basics that you will need to know before purchasing your computer.
You Need to Know
Conversion chart:
1GB (gigabyte) = 1,024MB (megabytes)
1MB (megabyte) = 1,024KB (kilobytes)
- For the most part, the name on the outside of the computer (i.e. Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.) has little to do with what is on the inside. If you were to remove the outside of a Dell and a HP computer and compare, the parts inside would be nearly the same and are probably even made by the same companies.
- Processor speed. This is how fast a computer can process your request. Unless you are a professional digital video editor by trade, this number really won't matter much at all to you. Any computer processor built within the last 5 years will suffice for most users today.
- RAM (Random Access Memory). If processor speed is how fast a computer can process your request, RAM is how fast a computer can show you the result of that request once it is ready. This is slightly more important than processor speed for today's computers and probably should be at least 256MB or higher if you are buying a new computer. The more RAM you have, the better.
- Hard drive. This is how much storage space your computer has. Different types of files take up different amounts of space. Media files generally take up much more space than text files. So if you will be storing a lot of pictures or videos on your computer, you will need more space. As a reference, a full quality picture from a 10 megapixel digital camera will take up about 10MB just for 1 picture file. So, using the conversion chart above, 1GB will hold about 100 pictures. These numbers can add up quickly.
Once you have the knowledge, its time to put it to use and make your investment. Feel free to start your search by browsing the selection of computers in our store. Just select the category above that matches what you are looking for and get started.
